What is ABA Therapy?
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is the most successful evidence based treatment method that is used to treat children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. ABA intervention employs the use of assessment-based intervention, an understanding of what drives behavior and how to change it, and uses data to drive decisions for treatment. ABA is recognized by The U.S. Surgeon General, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Institute of Mental Health.

What does an ABA session look like?
An ABA session is guided by an ABA therapist who will target skills in the areas of communication, socialization, and behavior. Each skill is broken down to its smallest part, through a hierarchy, and taught in a familiar way that is easy for the child to master. The ABA therapist collects data about the child’s performance in order to monitor progress. As goals are mastered, higher-level goals are introduced. ABA sessions include whatever the child enjoys as reinforcement, favorite games or activities, and sessions are interactive for the child.
What is Compassionate ABA?
Building a strong and positive relationship between therapist and child is a central theme of Compassionate ABA. Compassionate ABA takes cues from the child, and responds to their needs as part of the ABA session. A child’s interests, feelings, and emotional state are taken into account by the ABA therapist who aims to make the session as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. At Masterit, we believe that the greatest ABA sessions are based on a foundation of trust and a positive relationship with a therapist.

How does Masterit decide what to teach?
Areas to target are chosen based on what skills a child needs to learn, which is determined through assessment and evaluation. Children are taught developmentally appropriate skills that mirror typical development. We ensure that each child has a foundation of skills and use a hierarchy of skills to teach. In addition, parents and caregivers give information about problem behaviors and can suggest areas to target. A Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will use a combination of assessments to create a treatment plan that is unique for your child.
Is ABA only for younger children?
ABA is a wonderful tool for individuals of all ages. ABA can help people gain skills at any age. ABA can also improve functioning, reduce problem behavior, and help individuals shape their behavior in a way that increases opportunity. Masterit provides ABA therapy for individuals up to age 21.
